Mahón-Menorca Awarded 14 Total Medals at the 2018-19 World Cheese® Awards in Bergan, Norway

Menorca, Spain – November 28, 2018 – The Board of Control of Mahón-Menorca Cheese is proud to announce that a variety of their cheeses won a total of 14 medals at this year’s World Cheese Awards in Bergan, Norway. Mahón-Menorca Cheese is crafted to the highest standards using a unique process handed down by centuries of meticulous care, time and knowledge.

Over 3,400 cheeses from more than 41 different companies entered the competition for the world’s largest cheese only event. Judges from 30 countries tasted, nosed and graded cheeses from six continents, giving Bronze, Silver, Gold and Super Gold awards to worthy entries. 

The following Mahón-Menorca Cheeses were awarded medals during the competition:

Coinga three total medals – Gold – HARD DOP, Bronze – SEMI HARD DOP, Bronze –TENDER DOP

Subaida five  total medals – Super Gold – HARD DOP, Silver – HARD, Bronze – AÑEJO DOP, Bronze – HARD, Bronze – SEMIHARD DOP

Son Vives four total medals – SEMIHARD, Bronze – AÑEJO, Bronze – SEMIHARD DOP, Bronze – TENDER DOP

SA Canova  one medal – Bronze – SEMIHARD DOP

Quintana one medal – Bronze – HARD DOP

 The excellent group of judges included the finest palates from the international cheese community of cheese makers, cheesemongers, buyers, chefs and writers debated the world’s top cheeses. Judges included acclaimed Spanish Chef, Cathy Strange global executive coordinator for Whole Foods Market in The USA, Claus Meyer, co-founder of Noma in Denmark and Carlos Yescas author and cheesemonger from Mexico.

Mahón-Menorca Cheese is produced on the island of Menorca, one of Spain’s Balearic Islands. A paradisiacal Biosphere Reserve island (certified by the UNESCO) located in the Mediterranean Sea. Mahón-Menorca Cheese is a Protected Denomination of Origin (P.D.O.) cheese based upon the geographic and distinct climate factors including its temperature, humidity, light, wind and salty pastures, and its ancient farming methods mastered by generations of the Menorca family farms. Made from menorcan cow’s milk (pasteurized or raw), exclusively matured on the island of Menorca.
